We went and picked up Al and Jacqueline in the morning - we hadn't seen them since they returned to Canada from Australia last year.
First stop was the Immigration Museum on Pier 21 in Halifax. We were first given a 'tour' by a guide, a really old guy with a walking cane. However, the tour turned out to be a half-hour chat delivered from a chair that he didn't want to leave! Entertaining though.
We then went to the research centre to check up on my family history and the guy there came up with mostly the same information that Carole has already found - that my great grandparents had been married in Halifax and that my great grandmother was born there. The other piece of news we found out was that my great grandfather was a soldier so we have some military records to look up when we get back.
We did confirm the address of the church where they got married so headed off there. The church was knocked down in 1960 but I can say that I have stood on the spot where they married. We should have been able to ask if there were any graves for potential great great grandparents there but the office was unmanned. Still we have a phone number and website to check.
The other interesting area of the graveyard was where some of the Titanic victims were buried including a baby who they only positively identified through DNA a couple of years ago. It was surprising how many we're still left unidentified.
After a bite to eat we then headed up the coast to the beautiful harbour town of Lunenburg for a look round.
