We had an 8 hour drive ahead of us so left straight after breakfast. The first part of the journey was through Maine to Calais and the Canadian Border.
The map showed us passing through several towns on the way but all we saw were trees and more trees with just the occasional house or shack. It must be pretty bleak up here, especially in the winter. I've got no idea whether or not these towns had ever existed but there's nothing there now.
The border crossing at Calais is a small affair with one or two customs booths open in each direction. A couple of questions ( I'm guessing they don't see many Australian passports there) and we were in St Stephen, New Brunswick.
We'd told Carole's niece that we'd be with them around 7pm but had completely forgotten that Halifax is an hour ahead in the Atlantic timezone. However, most of the drive from here to Halifax was on freeways so we were able to get up to 110kph (or 70mph as our car displayed it) for the first time on the trip so we ate up the miles quickly. Through St John, NB, around Moncton NB and into Nova Scotia with only a couple of short stops and we made Halifax by 7pm.
After a bite to eat, we walked down to the water's edge on a crisp clear evening.
